Universiti Malaysia Sabah
Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) is an institution of higher education established on 24 November 1994. It is located in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Universiti Malaysia Sabah is the 9th public university established in Malaysia. Significant with the number 9, the main campus was also built on a 999 acres land situated along Sepanggar Bay, Kota Kinabalu. The desire to develop a university in Sabah implemented on 24 November 1994, when Parliament approved the establishment of Universiti Malaysia Sabah. The first development was in 2000 when UMS completed the first phase of its construction on 999-acre land. It also opened an international campus in 1999 located in Labuan. Later on in 2011, UMS also opened an agriculture Campus in Sandakan. Initially only three schools namely the School of Science and Technology, School of Business and Technology and School of Social Sciences was established. In addition, there is also a liberal education center called Centre for the Promotion of Knowledge and Language.
When the first academic session begins in mid-1995, there were 205 students who registered. Number of teaching staff of 24 lecturers and administration is managed by 13 management staff, assisted by 26 support staff. Up to now, besides the increasing number of schools, namely the School of Engineering and Information Technology, School of Education and Social Development, School of Psychology and Social Work, School of Food Science and Nutrition, School of International Tropical Forestry, School of Arts and School of Medicine as well as the existence of the latest four research institutes of the Research Institute for Tropical Biology and Conservation, Borneo Marine Research Institute, Biotechnology Research Institute and the Borneo Research Centre for Indigenous Studies (BorIIS).
UMS has a focus on the quality of graduates, institutions, and of the overall system in a variety of fields. With more than 1200 dedicated academicians, many of them have won awards nationally and internationally for their research and innovation. UMS offers 64 bachelor programs, with a total of ten faculties.
Since its establishment, UMS has made continuous effort to develop modern infrastructure, with amazing landscape and stunning structures. It is one of the most beautiful university campuses in Malaysia with its own beach and jetty.
